About the
International Pectinid Workshop

Join us as we delve into 50 years of groundbreaking research and celebrate the remarkable journey of scallop studies.

Milestones in Scallop Research

Explore the pivotal moments that have shaped the field of scallop research over the past 50 years.

'76

Inception of the Workshop

The first workshop was held, marking the beginning of a collaborative effort to advance scallop research. Key take-aways from the workshop were a need to increase scallop mariculture research and a noted deficiency of reliable data on European scallop stock populations and a push for ICES to require member states to collect adequate landing statistics and increase research efforts on these fisheries and their stock structure. '83

Advances in Stock Assessments

Int the 4th meeting the need for adequate input parameters, particularly natural mortality, for stock assessments was emphasised. It was noted that good progress in pectinid cultivation research was achieved, both in hatchery rearing and in natural collection of spat, in part due to the push for focus on those aspects reported in previous meetings. (Reported in ICES Pub 1983_K37 )

'97

Introduction of Sustainable Practices

’97 conference saw further adoption of sustainable aquaculture techniques to ensure the longevity of scallop populations.

Global Collaboration Expansion

The workshop expanded its glabal reach, welcoming even more international experts from all pectinid related fields to share insights and innovations.

Our Legacy in Scallop Research

For half a century, the International Pectin Workshop has been at the forefront of scallop research, driving advancements in biology, ecology, aquaculture, and management. Our commitment to excellence has fostered a community of dedicated scientists, industry, and management, all working towards sustainable practices and innovative solutions. Through collaborative efforts, we have significantly impacted the field, contributing to both scientific knowledge and the economic viability of scallop fisheries worldwide.

50 Years & 24 Workshops

The first International Pectinid Workshop was held in 1976 in Ireland. In the initial decade it was held every 2-3 years, then settled into a 2 year pattern on odd years. The location always changes with each edition, and the workshops have been held in 14 countries in Asia, Australia, Europe, and North and South America. Unfortunately the global pandemic prevented us from having a workshop in 2021, but gratefully we were able to resume in 2024. We are excited to celebrate our 50th year, and invite you to come and be a part of it in historic New Bedford, home to the largest scallop fleet in the world, as well as a rich and storied fishing heritage.
